On October 15th a group of Masons led by Wor. Bro. Harry Vokey, Masonic Temple Transition Team Committee, and Wor. Bro. Wilf MacDonald, P.M. removed the Whiteway Memorial from the east wall of the Masonic Temple on Cathedral Street. The memorial has been a fixture at the Masonic Temple for many years and is a tribute to Sir William Vance Whiteway, a mason and former Prime Minister of Newfoundland.
The memorial weighs approximately 500 pounds and was held on the wall by wires, that when cut was easily removed. To the surprise of the group another Masonic symbol was discovered on the wall behind the Whiteway Memorial which was probably part of the original Masonic Temple construction. Pictures of the memorial and the symbol can be viewed at the Masonic Park website www.masonicpark.ca
